Nest Learning Thermostat

The Nest thermostat from Google is one of the easiest to use and cost effective smart heating controllers. Its well designed interface is simple to operate and quick to learn as it doesn’t have many of the more advanced features of the more expensive controllers. That said, it can integrate with hot water systems as well as with the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

Nest’s main claim to fame is that it learns from your behaviour and adapts your home’s temperature accordingly. For example, it will learn when you like to turn the heating up or down and will automatically do it for you when it learns your patterns. As it learns more about your heating preferences the more it will adapt and control your heating without you having to lift a finger.

Nest also has a motion detector so it knows when the house is empty and will turn the heating down accordingly.

It is controlled via an app on a smart phone, tablet or desktop computer. One cool energy saving feature is a little green leaf that appears when you adjust to an energy efficient setting. However, as it’s a learning thermostat, Nest makes it more difficult to achieve the leaf icon over time which is designed to help you save more energy.

Hive Active Heating Controls

If you want to control your heating remotely and be in full control, Hive from British Gas is a good choice. Like Nest, the Hive thermostat is intuitive to use and quick and easy to master. However, it doesn’t have the ‘learning’ features of Nest which may suit some homeowners. Hive enables heating schedules to be designed and inputted manually.

A home’s occupants can choose whether or not they want device tracking enabled (it’s turned off by default). If it’s on, Hive will adjust the home’s heating if anyone is at home.

Hive also supports for multizones enabling you to control different room temperatures as well as hot water in real time as well as to a schedule. Hot water control is included as standard.

Hive has an added benefit in that it will suggest energy saving tips and provide information on your energy use.

Tado Thermostat at Home

Tado Smart Thermostat

Tado, like Nest, adapts to homeowners’ heating preferences. One way in which it does this is by tracking the locations of family members or other people living in your house via their mobile phones. Tado then turns the heating on automatically if it detects they’re close to home. Likewise, it will turn heating down if the house is empty.

Tado also adapts to weather conditions. So if it’s hot outside, Tado will lower the temperature of the heating system and use the ambient, outdoor heat to meet the desired indoor temperature.

With these features working together, Tado claims that heating bills can be reduced by up to 31% with their Smart thermostat.
