Modern A-rated gas boilers are highly efficient for home heating. However, because they still rely on gas, a fossil fuel, they contribute largely to a home’s carbon usage and emissions.
An alternative is an air source heat pump.
It’s estimated that carbon emissions caused by heating water, central heating and cooking account for over a fifth of carbon emissions in the UK. Such is their impact that the UK government plan to ban gas boiler installations in new build homes from 2025. Alternatives, therefore, are needed. While there are a few alternatives such as hydrogen and electric fuelled heating, one sticks out as the most viable; air source heat pumps.
How do air source heat pumps work?
Essentially, air source heat pumps extract outside air and convert or concentrate the heat within the air and transfer it to the heating system indoors. The supply of air in the atmosphere is abundant making it a very efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way of home heating.
Grants available for air source heat pump installations
The Scottish Government currently offers grants via the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme to eligible households to help pay for the installation of air source heat pumps. You can read more on the Home Energy Scotland website.
Although air source heat pump installations are on the rise, they are still expensive compared to conventional gas boilers. The starting price is around £7,000 and additional insulation work to homes may also be required.
