Emergency Gas and Carbon Monoxide Procedure

Do you know what to do if you smell gas in your home or suspect that there might be a gas leak? What about a carbon monoxide leak? This deadly gas can pose even more of a risk as it is invisible and odourless.

Here are some simple dos and don’t to carry out in the event of a gas leak or suspected carbon monoxide leak.

  • Do not smoke or light matches.
  • Do not turn electrical switches on or off.
  • Open doors and windows for better ventilation.
  • Turn off the meter at the control handle unless the meter is in the cellar.
  • Call the National Gas Emergency number – 0800 111 999. Available 24 hours a day.

  • Stop using all appliances, switch them off, and open doors and windows to ventilate the property.
  • Evacuate the property immediately.
  • Stay calm and avoid raising your heart rate.
  • Call the National Gas Emergency number – 0800 111 999 (available 24 hours a day) or the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Gas Safety Advice Line on 0800 300 363 (9.00am – 5.30 pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00am – 5.00pm on Friday (excluding bank holidays).
  • Don’t go back into the property; wait for advice from the emergency services.
  • Seek immediate medical help; you may not realise you’ve been affected by carbon monoxide. Going outside into fresh air won’t treat any exposure by itself.
